In our modern era, our water goes through chemical treatment processes, which are necessary for providing us ‘clean’ drinking water. However, these processes leave behind residual chemicals, deplete essential minerals, and alter the pH of the water. As a result, the water lacks vitality and prana, fails to hydrate cells adequately, and often has an unpleasant taste.

So what can we do to not only ensure our water is safe to drink but also be sure that it is medicinal for our bodies the way that it’s meant to be?

A solution may be more simple than you think - try Tamra Jal or therapeutic water from the Vedic tradition.  Tamra Jal can be traced back to an Ancient practice of over 5000 years and it’s quite simple - Tamra Jal is water that has been stored in a copper vessel.

Discover how Tamra Jal can improve your water:

  1. Storing in copper puts vitality and prana back into the water.

These treatment systems destroy the water’s natural balance and its pH is dramatically shifted, thus the water is not easily absorbed by cells. Therefore you can drink a large amount of this water yet the water is not properly being absorbed, leaving your cells dehydrated and still craving the water it needs.

The copper vessel ionizes (making the water an electrolyte), re-energizes the water, and balances the pH, making the water “alive” again. Energized water is more easily absorbed by your cells and therefore increases hydration and eases fatigue.

  1. Copper makes water an natural antioxidant.

Free radicals are molecules that damage cellular health and accelerate aging by causing oxidation of cells. Free radicals are created in our bodies naturally, but in excess when we consume certain chemicals in food and by polution in our environment. We can lessen the effect of free radical damage by consuming anti-oxidants, like tamra Jal. Antioxidants are molecules that are anti-oxidizing and prevent this cellular damage. The result is health and hydration of cells and a slowing down of the aging process (vaya-sthapak) by slowing down the oxidation of cells.

  1. Copper cleans the water.

Copper is antibacterial and antiviral. When we store water in a copper vessel for at least 8 hours, the Oligodynamic Effect occurs when copper ions from the cup or container dissolve in the water in small amounts. As a result, copper water has the potency to destroy harmful microbes, fungi and bacteria and was used in the Vedic tradition as a sterilization method.

  1. Tamra Jal ensures you have the copper you need.

Copper is vital for our health. It's estimated that about 25% of Americans are not getting adequate copper. Humans only need about 1 MG of copper a day to maintain health, but we cannot synthesize copper from other compounds so it’s a vital element to consume directly. Great sources of copper can also be found in shellfish, whole grains, organ meats such as kidney and liver, prunes, cacao, and black pepper to name a few.

A bit about the importance of Copper:

Copper’s vital role in energy:

  1. Copper is crucial for a healthy brain and nervous system.

  2. Copper is essential for absorbing iron from the gut.

When copper levels are low the body may absorb less iron. Copper plays an important role in the digestive system pulling iron molecules from your food. Thus a copper deficiency can cause iron deficiency anemia, a condition in which the body is unable to carry enough oxygen to its tissues.

Other roles of Copper

Copper holds a pivotal role in the synthesis of collagen within the body. Collagen, indispensable for the health of skin, hair, nails, and all connective tissues, relies on copper for its creation. This synthesis is not only crucial for maintaining healthy muscle tone but also for the elasticity of blood vessels, directly influencing optimal blood pressure. Furthermore, copper plays a significant role in supporting proper blood coagulation.

It is an essential element for the production of melanin, a protector against harmful UV radiation, ensuring the skin's defense mechanism.

In addition, copper contributes to the maintenance of robust white blood cell levels, fostering a resilient immune system. Its positive impact extends to promoting bone strength, regulating a healthy thyroid, and combating arthritis. Beyond these benefits, copper has been associated with enhancements in fertility, wound healing, and is recognized for its potential anti-carcinogenic properties.

Symptoms of low copper:

  1. Prematurely graying hair 2) Chronic fatigue and weakness 3) Decreased immune function. 4) Poor memory 5) Difficulty with coordination and a feeling of unsteadiness when walking 6) Weak bones.

*(High supplementation of zinc may cause copper deficiency as they compete for absorption).

How to safely to consume therapeutic water and use a copper cup or container:

  1. Use a vessel of authentic copper. The quality of your copper is important. Purchasing from suppliers of the Ayurvedic community is a great option to ensure good quality.

  2. In general a good routine would be to fill the copper cup with water at night. If starting with tap water its suggested to use charcoal water filter prior to storing the water in the copper mug. Let the water sit for 6-8 hours allowing the copper ions to absorb into the water. It is best to drink the revitalized water fist thing in the morning. This washes the GI tract, flushes the kidneys, and stimulates peristalsis.

  3. As with most things, you can have too much of a good thing. In the USA, the FDA suggests that our body needs about 1 mg of copper a day. An adequate amount to drink is typically 2-3 cups of copper water a day. Do not overdo this or it may be harmful for your well-being.

  4. After approximately three months of drinking daily, you should take a break for a month and then resume drinking for three months and so on.

  5. Copper is heating and abrasive in quality, thus great for Kapha individuals. Best applied during the winter months and springtime when there is less heat in the environment. Pitta folks should be careful in the summer months to not overheat themselves. Also, Vata types should use caution in the autumn months because of the abrasive effect.

  6. Rinse and scrub your copper cup during washing and make sure that there are no deposits or precipitates, as copper sulfate can cause nausea.  Wash and dry after each use.

Pure copper still oxidizes with water, so stains are normal. Cleanse periodically with lime juice to remove stains.
